Pen and Ink on Sculpted Paper
I've often been asked what is the name of my technique. A consistent reaction to my completed works has proven that a descriptive name was a more helpful answer. Those seeing my work for the first time are often quick to describe it as "oils", "thick paint", and even "encaustic".
There are 3 stages to this technique which I outline briefly here.
Stage 1: I manipulate and "sculpt" a variety of papers by hand with very minimal tools, in an attempt to create texture that is appropriate to for the subject. The paper is adhered to canvas or panel with artist-quality mediums. The new structure hardens into its own unique surface.
A specialty in my technique it to form an entire subject out of a single sheet of paper. Monarch (bear), Scenting Sunshine, Reynard and Vixen (all foxes), One Second Away (marten) are examples of that.
Stage 2: After the surface has dried I apply my under colours in layer of acrylic washes. This results in interesting and unpredictable effects and becomes a source of inspiration for the final stage.
Stage 3: I detail the image line by line with a pen nib dipped into acrylic inks. Sometimes I will glaze over stained sections in the background for a more cohesive look.
Eventually, all three steps merge as one, and become more challenging to distinguish as three separate stages.
The background can be worked first, during, or after any of the three stages and can include a variety of mediums (yarn, gold leaf), and of course paper.
This is a technique I developed in 2008. There is a story on this process that can be found in my Artist Statement here

One of the benefits of my technique is that I use very little paint (waste is exceedingly minimal.) This does require a necessity to utilize top quality mediums that feature maximum pigment load, and strong stable properties. Top quality professional artist grade paints and gels, which include UV protectors, are used exclusively. My brand go to's: Golden, TriArt, F/W Rowney, Holbein and Liquitex Professional.
